Water Treatment
Services in
Sunrise, FL

Sunrise runs its own water utility with three treatment plants. Most of the city sits in the Springtree service area, where Biscayne Aquifer water is lime-softened and federal testing in 2023 and 2024 found PFOS at about 10 parts per trillion. We test your tap for free and recommend only the equipment the reading supports.

PFAS results depend on which plant your water comes from. EPA-required testing found PFOS at 11 and 9.8 parts per trillion (ppt) and PFOA at 4.9 and 4.6 ppt in water leaving the Springtree plant in October 2023 and February 2024. EPA's 2024 rule caps each at 4 ppt, but that limit isn't enforceable until 2029, so the City is within the law today. Water from the Sawgrass membrane plant showed no PFAS in its 2025 samples. At home, an under-sink reverse osmosis system is the usual way to take PFAS out of drinking water.

The City of Sunrise Utilities Department, based at 777 Sawgrass Corporate Parkway, runs the water, sewer and gas service. Its water reaches well beyond the city limits: Weston, parts of Davie and Southwest Ranches, and some unincorporated land are on it too, about 229,000 people in all by the City's 2023 count. The source is groundwater from wells in the Biscayne Aquifer, plus a small share of deeper Floridan Aquifer water at Springtree, and it leaves every plant disinfected with chloramine.

For a typical Sunrise house or condo, three things are worth checking. PFAS and chlorate in drinking water are handled by RO at the kitchen sink. The chloramine taste and the byproducts that form in the pipes call for catalytic carbon on the main line. And because most of the city was built in the 1970s and early 1980s, plumbing solder is worth one lab test for lead. Hardness depends on the plant and on blending, so we measure it before suggesting a softener.

Sunrise's Water Utility: Springtree, Sawgrass and Southwest Plants

Plant details from the City's utility overview, its engineers' published work and EPA's public water system records
🔵 Covers Most of the City

Springtree (FL4061410)

The City bought this plant from Central Broward Utilities in 1969. It lime-softens and filters Biscayne Aquifer water (24 million gallons a day of capacity in the City's 2015 overview) and since 2014 has also run a 1.5 MGD reverse osmosis unit on Floridan Aquifer water. EPA lists 79,550 people on this system. In 2026 the City put a second 1.7 MGD membrane unit out to bid.

Lime Softening + Small RO Unit
🔵 Weston and the West End

Sawgrass (FL4061408)

Built in 2000 and expanded in 2003, this is a 24 MGD nanofiltration plant fed by the Arena and Flamingo Park wellfields. Its raw water averages 265 mg/L of hardness, about 15.5 grains per gallon, so the membranes do most of the softening. A side stream of iron-filtered, ion-exchange water is now blended back in to restore some minerals. EPA lists 72,400 people.

Nanofiltration Membranes
🔵 South of Griffin Road

Southwest (FL4064326)

Bought in 1997, this is the small one: about 2 MGD of lime softening on three wells. It supplies the City's customers south of Griffin Road in Davie, Southwest Ranches and unincorporated Broward, which billing treats as a separate rate area. EPA lists 10,750 people and 2,702 connections.

Lime Softening

For regulatory purposes every address is mapped to one plant, and most of Sunrise itself falls inside the Springtree boundary; the Sawgrass area mainly covers Weston, Bonaventure and the west side of Davie. The City's service area map points out that the systems are connected, so water from more than one plant can reach the same street. Each area gets its own annual water quality report on the City's website. Billing and account questions go to customer service at 954-746-3232, and the Utilities Department's main line is 954-888-6000.

Sunrise Water Test Results in EPA Records

EPA unregulated-contaminant testing (UCMR 3 in 2014, UCMR 5 in 2023–2025), lead and copper results, and the federal violation database
🟠 Above the 2029 Federal Limit

PFOS and PFOA at Springtree

PFOS measured 11 ppt in October 2023 and 9.8 ppt in February 2024; PFOA measured 4.9 and 4.6 ppt. Shorter-chain PFAS (PFBA, PFBS, PFPeA, PFHxA) were also detected at 3 to 7 ppt. An August 2023 sample was below reporting limits. EPA's 4 ppt limits for PFOS and PFOA take effect in 2029, and EPA has proposed extending that to 2031.

Fix: Under-Sink RO
🔵 Not Detected in 2025

PFAS at Sawgrass

Samples from the Sawgrass plant in January and July 2025 had none of the 29 PFAS on EPA's list, and no lithium, above the lab's reporting limits. The plant's water reaches Sunrise homes where the systems mix, so a home can get a blend of the two plants.

Fix: Nothing Required
🟡 2014 Results, No Federal Limit

Chlorate

Springtree water measured 347 ppb in May 2014 and up to 918 ppb that November, including at a test point on NW 44th Street; Sawgrass measured 332 to 761 ppb. EPA uses 210 ppb as a health reference level for screening. There is no legal limit and no newer public data.

Fix: Reverse Osmosis
🟡 Low Levels, No Federal Limit

Chromium-6

Springtree samples in 2014 ran 0.15 to 0.18 ppb at the plant and in the pipes; Sawgrass ranged from not detected to 0.16 ppb. EPA regulates only total chromium (100 ppb). California's limit for chromium-6 is 10 ppb, and EWG's health guideline is 0.02 ppb.

Fix: RO if Desired
🟠 One Exceedance, Since Resolved

Trihalomethanes

EPA's records show one health-based violation for the City's systems: Springtree's running average for total trihalomethanes went over the 80 ppb limit in late 2020, and the system was back in compliance by November 2021. The other records since 2009 are missed or late monitoring and reports.

Fix: Catalytic Carbon
🔵 Under the Action Level

Lead and Copper at the Tap

In the 2023 sampling round, the 90th-percentile lead result was 1.3 ppb on the Springtree system and 3.1 ppb on Sawgrass, against an action level of 15 ppb. The City says water leaving its plants has no detectable lead, so what turns up at a faucet comes from the home's own plumbing.

Fix: Free Lab Lead Test

Lead at the Kitchen Tap by City System, 2023

Springtree (most of Sunrise)1.3 ppb
Sawgrass (Weston, west Davie)3.1 ppb
Southwest (south of Griffin Road)9.9 ppb
Federal action level15 ppb
90th-percentile results from EPA's lead and copper data for each system's 2023 round: nine in ten sampled homes were at or below the figure shown. EPA's 2024 lead rule lowers the action level to 10 ppb from late 2027.

PFAS From the Springtree Plant and What RO Does About It

The difference between the plants comes down to treatment. Lime softening is built to drop calcium out of the water, and it does little to PFAS; nanofiltration membranes hold most PFAS back, which fits the clean Sawgrass results. The small Southwest lime plant tells the same story, with PFOA at 9.3 ppt in 2023 and 12.3 ppt in December 2024. The membrane unit the City is adding at Springtree is described in its 2026 bid as a second train for the existing RO system; the bid doesn't say what share of the plant's flow it will treat.

Until the limits apply, a Springtree-area home can deal with it at the kitchen sink. Our reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink has five stages, is NSF/ANSI certified and is designed to remove PFAS, along with chlorate, chromium-6 and lead, from the water you drink and cook with. Showers and laundry don't need it. If the free test or your address puts you on Sawgrass water, we'll tell you RO is optional.

Is the Water Hard? What Lime Softening and Membranes Leave Behind

It's partly softened at the plant, and how much depends on where it was treated. Untreated Biscayne water around here is very hard: the City's own engineers reported 265 mg/L at the Sawgrass wellfields in 2019, about 15.5 grains per gallon. Springtree's lime process takes out a large share of the calcium. Sawgrass membranes take out more, and then the City adds some minerals back on purpose, because water that's too soft is harder on pipes. Neither report prints a finished hardness figure, and blending means two homes a mile apart can read differently.

So we test before quoting. If the reading is high enough to leave crust on the shower glass and scale in the water heater, a softener sized from that number, usually 48,000 to 64,000 grains for a family home, solves it. If it's low, a softener only adds a salt bill, and we'll say so. Where you do add one, carbon in front of it keeps chloramine from wearing out the resin. Our water softener installation page covers the valves and tank sizes we use.

Chloramine Taste and the Spring Chlorine Switch

Most of the year the City disinfects with chloramine, chlorine bound to ammonia, which lasts longer in roughly 600 miles of mains and gives the water its faint pool smell. Once a year the Utilities Department switches to free chlorine for about four weeks to clean out the system. In 2026 that ran from April 27 to May 25; in 2025 it was April 28 to May 26, and in 2024 April 22 to May 20. During the switch the water can taste and smell sharper. The City notifies dialysis centers and hospitals, and aquarium owners should use a dechlorinator rated for both chlorine and chloramine. The notice applies to everyone billed by the City of Sunrise, including customers in Davie, Weston and Southwest Ranches.

Trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids form as disinfectant reacts with natural organic matter in the water, and they keep forming the longer water sits in the pipes. Springtree's one exceedance, in late 2020, was for trihalomethanes. Catalytic carbon where the main line enters the house reduces chloramine, the spring chlorine and much of the byproduct load at every faucet and shower; standard carbon in a pitcher does little for chloramine. The tank sizes and media are on our whole-house water filtration page.

Chlorate and Chromium-6: What the 2014 Samples Showed

Chlorate comes from chlorine-based disinfectants, and both large plants carried a lot of it in 2014: every one of the eight samples was above EPA's 210 ppb screening level, with the highest, 918 ppb, at Springtree in November. That's the latest public data, and there is still no federal limit to compare it with. Chromium-6 was present at low levels, 0.15 to 0.18 ppb at Springtree. It has no federal limit either; California's state limit is 10 ppb, and EWG's much stricter guideline is 0.02 ppb.

Neither result means the water is unsafe under current law. If you'd like less of both in what you drink, the same kitchen RO that handles PFAS covers them, so one system answers all three questions.

Lead Solder in 1970s Homes and Condo Install Rules

Most of the housing is older than the solder ban. The city started in 1961 as Sunrise Golf Village, a developer's community of fewer than 350 people, and grew from 7,403 residents in 1970 to 39,681 in 1980 and 64,407 in 1990, U.S. Census figures show. Lead solder was banned in drinking water plumbing in 1986, so a large share of Sunrise homes, from the original golf village streets to the first Springtree and Welleby subdivisions, were plumbed before that. Low utility-wide results don't rule out a high reading at one kitchen faucet.

The free lab test settles it. We collect the first water drawn after the tap sits overnight and send it to a certified lab at no charge. A high result is handled at that faucet with RO or a filter certified for lead.

Condos and 55-plus communities. Sunrise Lakes, the 55-plus condo community off Pine Island Road, went up in phases from the early 1970s, and the city has many other condo and townhouse complexes. A whole-unit system needs access to a main line that feeds only your unit, plus association approval. An under-sink RO system stays inside your cabinet and avoids both.

Home or condo built before 1986? Ask for the lead test when you book. It's free, it's done by a certified lab, and it tells you whether your plumbing adds anything the City's results can't show. Call 561-352-9989.

What Happens at the Free Test, Install and Follow-Up Visits

The free water test takes about 20 minutes at your sink. We read hardness in grains per gallon, chloramine, total dissolved solids, pH and iron, then go over the results next to the plant data for your service area. The lab lead test is added for older homes at no cost.

Most installs happen the same day: two to four hours for a single tank, four to six for a three-stage system. The warranty runs 5 years on the control valve and 10 on the tank. After that, the same local crew handles filter and membrane changes and, if you have a softener, salt delivery to your door. Calls come to our own office.

Water Treatment Service Area in Sunrise

Common Questions About Sunrise Tap Water

It meets current federal and state drinking water standards. The one health-based violation in EPA's records, a trihalomethane average over the limit in late 2020, was resolved in 2021. The figure to know is PFAS: Springtree's 2023–24 PFOS and PFOA results are above the 4 ppt limits that start in 2029. If you want it lower now, an under-sink RO system for drinking water is the usual fix.

Customer service and billing is 954-746-3232, weekdays. The Utilities Department's main line is 954-888-6000. For after-hours water emergencies, the City's Public Service page lists 954-888-6087 for weekday evenings and 954-746-3500 for late nights and weekends.

Check the service area map on the City's water quality page, which assigns each address to a plant and its annual report. Most addresses inside Sunrise are in the Springtree area, while Weston and Bonaventure are mostly Sawgrass. Because the systems are connected, some homes get a mix.

That's the yearly switch from chloramine to free chlorine, about four weeks long; in 2026 it ran April 27 to May 25. The City says the water stays safe to drink. A whole-house catalytic carbon filter takes out the smell during the switch and the rest of the year.

Yes. Our five-stage RO system is designed to remove PFAS, including PFOS and PFOA, from the water at its own faucet. Change the filters and membrane on schedule, because an overdue membrane removes less.

Only if your reading shows hardness worth treating. The plants soften the water before it leaves, by lime at Springtree and by membranes at Sawgrass, but neither publishes a finished hardness number, and results vary with blending. A 20-minute test answers it; if the water is already fairly soft, carbon and RO make more sense.

They come from different utilities. Plantation's two membrane plants run entirely on nanofiltration, found no PFAS in 2024 testing and deliver soft water. Sunrise's main Springtree plant uses lime softening, which leaves more minerals and didn't remove PFOS and PFOA in 2023–24 tests. Homes near the border should check which city bills them.

Yes, and under-sink RO is the usual choice because it fits inside the kitchen cabinet and rarely needs association approval. A whole-unit filter needs access to a line that serves only your unit and the board's sign-off.

Under-sink RO runs $799–$1,200 installed. A softener is $1,495–$2,500, whole-house carbon starts at $1,495, and carbon, softener and RO together run $3,200–$5,500. We quote after the free test, and financing with monthly payments is available.

Usually same day: two to four hours for one system, four to six for three. RO filters and the membrane get changed on their own schedule, and carbon media needs replacing every few years. With a softener, check the salt monthly (most homes use about a bag a month), clean the brine tank yearly, service the valve every 5–7 years and expect the resin to last 10–12.
